The Upstate area of South Carolina has experienced a moderate increase of 4,351 jobs for November 2006 compared with the same period in 2005. This represents an increase of nearly 1% in employment and over the same time period the unemployment rate has fallen from 6.6% to 6.1%.

Employment / Economic Announcements


 

  • Echostar Communications (DISH Network) announced it will open its fourth satellite refurbishment and repair center in Spartanburg, creating 1,300 full-time jobs.
  • Ford Motor Credit Company will expand its operations in Mauldin, occupying 28,000 additional square feet of space to accommodate 200 new employees.
  • Caterpillar announced an expansion at its Fountain Inn plant which will see the transfer of about 40 engineers from other sites to its new “marine center of excellence”. This expansion represents an investment of approximately $25 million.
  • Automotive supplier Faurecia announced a capital investment of $24 million to expand its Fountain Inn facility. The expansion is for vehicle seating to be used in BMW vehicles assembled in Greer and will create about 40 new jobs at Fountain Inn.
  • Gordon Food Service is to establish a distribution operation at the Matrix in Greenville County. This expansion is expected to generate 50 new jobs.
  • GS*P North America, Inc. has announced the expansion of its facility in Spartanburg which remanufactures CV axles and steering mechanisms. This development is expected to add 50 new jobs.
