During the University of South Carolina’s
Annual Economic Outlook Conference, economist Donald Schunk
stated that Charleston County is expected to produce more than
8,000 new jobs during 2006, leading the state in job growth.
This new job growth is attributed to the area’s
attractiveness, quality of life, and economic diversity. The
industries in which most new jobs will come from include
aerospace, legal services, housing, health care, accounting,
and tourism.

One of the top job announcements comes from
Daimler-Chrysler, who named North Charleston as the site for
its new Dodge Sprinter van assembly plant. The company will
initially invest $35 million and employ 220 when the
plant produces its first van in the final quarter of 2006.
This announcement is part of a three-phase plan that could
eventually create 1,800 jobs.

A new
Tanger Factory Outlet Center will create more than 900 full
and part-time jobs at 90 stores in North Charleston when the
shopping center is completed next fall.

Valley
Forge Flag Company, a American manufacturer and distributor
of flags will establish its new distribution center in
Berkeley County’s Mt. Holly Commerce Park, creating 70 new
jobs.

FoodHandler Inc., a seller of disposable gloves and other
safe food-handling products, will relocate its distribution
center from Memphis to North Charleston in the Palmetto
Commerce Park. The company will create approximately 30 jobs
during a five-year period.

Kontane
Logistics, a third party logistics provider, opened a
warehouse and distribution center in the Charleston region,
and created 20 jobs.

SKF, a
supplier of products and services in the rolling bearings
and seals business, has selected Charleston as the site for
the Specialty Bearings Manufacturing Operations of MRC
Bearings. The company will create 100 new jobs.
